“Our Jandson home is personalised even though we chose a house off the plan”
For Erica Meggitt and David Owen the arrival of the first child no doubt played a role in their decision to move from an apartment into a newly built home. Erica, David and baby Sammy — 10 months old — recently moved into their new Jandson Homes, the Galaxy, in Sydney’s south-west.
“We were looking to move from our unit and saw an article in the Domain Magazine featuring a knockdown rebuild project by Jandson Homes,” explained Erica. It was from this point on that Erica and David decided on building a new home.
They then “developed certain ideas” about what they wanted in their new home and “researched builders, mostly on the internet”. It was while doing the internet based research that Erica and David decided Jandson Homes’ single storey, five bedroom Galaxy suited them and their criteria best.
“We did look at a few builders, but only to satisfy ourselves that there wasn’t a more suitable floor plan out there. Luckily we didn’t waste a lot of time doing this,” added Erica.
Jandson Homes are well known for the flexibility and adaptability of their home designs. In Erica and David’s case their home overlooks the Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute, Camden.
Because of the existing views, the Galaxy design was slightly altered. A substantial pergola was added down the side of the house and a large, covered verandah out the back. Smaller alterations to the internal design were also made to accommodate an increase to the size of the front verandah.
Internally, a dwarf wall was removed from the dining room and a few sliding doors were added to the interior and exterior.
Their carefully considered alterations have resulted in fantastic lifestyle benefits specific to their individual location.
“We love the open plan of the kitchen rolling onto the rumpus room and then flowing onto the verandah and the backyard. You can be in the kitchen and look through to the pool, backyard and the views beyond.
“The main feature of the house is really the agricultural views — paddocks, hills, a creek, trees ? it’s beautiful. We made our main living areas really focus on these views and tried to bring the outside in.
“Although we still live in the suburbs, we feel like we live rurally,” said Erica.

On a more practical level, the addition of sliding doors internally allows for areas of the home that can be shut off so individual sections can be either heated or cooled, rather than the whole home.
Like so many new home builders, Erica and David faced strict building criteria to ensure the fa‡ade blended with the aesthetic of the surrounding area. The fa‡ade chosen is “timeless and won’t date to a particular era. It blends but is still unique”.
“This has been a great project. Stressful at times, but we’ve had good fun doing it and are so satisfied with the results. Our Jandson home is personalised, even though we chose a home off a plan,” concluded Erica.
